Step zero: find your towers before you buy anything

Every decision below comes out of one lookup, and it is free.

  1. Open a broadcast coverage map and enter your full street address, not just the ZIP code. A hill between two streets changes the answer.
  2. Write down the distance in miles to the transmitters for CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC. They are often clustered in one direction, which makes life easy, but not always.
  3. Write down the compass direction of the furthest one you care about. That is where the antenna will point.
  4. Write down the band each station uses: UHF, or VHF channels 7 to 13. This single detail decides more returns than anything else on the page.
  5. Look out of the window in that direction. A tree line, a hill, a taller building or a metal roof next door is a real obstacle, and it is the reason two neighbours get different results with the same antenna.

Signal strength on those maps is usually colour coded. Green means an indoor antenna has a fair chance.

Yellow means you need gain, height, or both.

Height beats size almost every time.

The same antenna moved from a ground-floor window to an attic often turns a stuttering channel into a locked one,

because what you are fighting is the horizon and everything standing on it.

The VHF trap that causes most of the returns

Most cheap flat panels are tuned for UHF,

and they are honest about it in the fine print rather than on the front of the package.

Plenty of network affiliates, though, broadcast on high-VHF, channels 7 through 13.

If the local NBC or CBS station in your market is one of them,

a UHF-only panel will pull in twenty channels you do not care about and miss the one carrying the game.

This is why step zero asks for the band. If any station you want sits on VHF 7 to 13,

buy an antenna that lists VHF-High and UHF in its specification,

which normally means a unit with longer elements or a loop rather than a thin rectangle.

Amplifiers: when they help and when they make things worse

An amplifier boosts everything it receives,

noise included. It earns its place in two situations: a long cable run of fifty feet or more,

and a split going to several televisions. Those are losses it genuinely recovers.

What it does not do is create a signal that never arrived. Worse,

close to a transmitter an amplifier can overload the tuner and knock out strong channels that worked fine without it.

If you live within about ten miles of the towers, start with the amplifier unplugged and only add it if a channel is missing.

so a $40 indoor antenna that works pays for itself before the second Sunday of the season and keeps working every year after.

Installing it and scanning for channels

  1. Put the antenna as high as the cable allows, on the wall or window facing the towers you wrote down.
  2. Run the coaxial cable to the connector marked ANT IN or RF IN on the back of the television.
  3. In the TV menu, change the input source from Cable to Antenna or Air. Skipping this is the single most common reason a working antenna finds nothing.
  4. Run Channel Scan, sometimes called Auto Program. Give it the five to ten minutes it asks for.
  5. Write down which channel numbers map to CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC, and stick the note to the remote before the weekend.

If a channel comes in broken up, move the antenna a foot at a time and rescan.

Reception is not a dial that turns up smoothly: digital television either locks or breaks apart,

Five mistakes that cost people the game

  • Believing the mileage on the box. A panel advertised at 200 miles is marketing. The curve of the earth puts the real ceiling near 70 miles even in flat country.
  • Mounting it on a window with a metal screen or low-E coating. Both reflect the signal straight back outside. Try a different window before blaming the antenna.
  • Amplifying by reflex. Close to the towers the amplifier is the problem, not the fix.
  • Splitting to three televisions on one cheap antenna. Every split halves the signal. Use a powered distribution block or give the second room its own antenna.
  • Scanning once and never again. Stations change frequency more often than people expect. Rescan at the start of the season and any time a channel disappears.

Where to buy, and what to check before you pay

  • Buy where the return window is long and free. You are testing a physical guess about your address, and a first attempt that fails is normal, not a disaster.
  • Check the specification sheet for VHF-High and UHF if any station you want is on channels 7 to 13.
  • Prefer a unit with a detachable coaxial cable. A fixed four-foot cable decides where the antenna lives, and that is a decision you want back.
  • For outdoor and attic units, check that the mount is included. Buying the antenna and discovering the mast is separate costs another week.
  • Ignore reviews written by people in another state. The only review that predicts your result is one from your own market, and even then their windows face somewhere else.

Test it on a weekday, not twenty minutes before kickoff

Run the scan on a quiet evening in the week.

Leave the game channels playing for half an hour and watch for stutter, because reception can change with weather,

with traffic, and with a tree in leaf.
